The StartmeupHK Festival 2018 was an exciting, enriching celebration of tech innovation in Asia’s most dynamic startup hub. From 29th January to 2nd February 2018, over 6,000 participants and 195 speakers from Asia and around the world came together to share ideas, glimpse the technologies of the future, and make connections. In addition to the five core events detailed below, the Festival included a variety of community events such as job fairs, startup showcases, networking events and workshops, across multiple venues in Hong Kong.

StartMeUpHK Venture Forum

The Festival’s flagship event, the Venture Forum, featured a diverse range of speakers from government, academia and industry, including inspiring keynotes from Paul Chan, the Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government and YJ Fischer of Virgin Hyperloop One. A series of talks, fireside chats and panel discussions presented insightful analyses and thought-provoking ideas on bringing emerging technologies to life in Hong Kong’s vibrant startup ecosystem.


The two day Fintech Finals event, hosted by Next Money, brought together some of the world’s best speakers on fintech design, innovation and entrepreneurship with global fintech leaders and challengers. Besides a range of talks, panel discussions, workshops, tours and networking meets, the event also saw 22 startups make an enthusiastic pitch for a chance to win the coveted best-in-show title, with the honours going to Checkbox, an Australian regtech startup.


Hosted by KPMG, the Connected City Conference explored the challenges cities face, and how to address these challenges by building smart cities that foster innovation, enhance productivity and provide better social support. Julian Vella of KPMG shared insightful findings from the company’s ‘Connecting Hong Kong’ smart city survey. Through a series of lectures and panel discussions, experts from around the world discussed solutions for smart living, and explored what the future holds for Hong Kong and other cities.


Retail’s Cutting Edge, hosted by Inside Retail, examined the trends and technological forces shaping the retail industry, with a focus on solutions emerging from Hong Kong’s startup community. Featuring 15 speakers and over 500 delegates, the talks and discussions explored a wide range of topics including e-commerce, logistics, cryptocurrencies and blockchain. In addition, an immersive VR showcase demonstrated how VR and AR could enhance and transform the customer experience.


Healthtech O2O, hosted by NexChange, brought together over 1,000 policymakers, practitioners, investors and entrepreneurs in the health and wellness field, to discuss the challenges and solutions to improving human well-being. The day’s events explored innovations in health care that would allow early identification of health risks, support timely interventions, and help slow down ageing, alongside a host of related issues including the role of big data, personalised care, the digitisation of medicine, and much more.


On the final day of the Festival the Internet of Life Summit, hosted by Brinc and The Mills Fabrica, showcased the new reality of a world without limitations. Over 1,700 attendees participated in discussions and witnessed product demonstrations that highlighted how technology can merge with everyday life through the Internet of Things, and transform the way we live in the near future.
